we march because

We march because in 1969 Sylvia Rivera threw the first brick and yet fifty years later bathrooms are still being patrolled and controlled,

because you treat my fellow sisters like we're both your worst nightmare and your greatest fantasy rolled into one even though we are not here for your pleasure,

and because America's worst mass shooting in history took place in our month against our people and they ask why marriage isn't enough?

We march because you think a stands for ally but laugh about plants when we try and explain,

because gender and time are both social constructs and yet you are happier to adjust your clock than to accept someones name change?

And because blue and pink are still seen as having meanings and yet adding a purple stripe means people get ignored?

We march because our history is removed from the textbooks, our names are edited out of history and simple search terms are repeatedly restricted,

because our stories and our characters are still seen as groundbreaking and because they say it doesn't matter when they all end the same way.

We march because a pink triangle meant you went straight back to prison after liberation and seventy years later the world is turning a blind eye once more,

we march because for every step we take as a community a younger member can join our numbers and we march when we can in honour of those who cannot.

We march because why should we hide when we want to celebrate

we march because love is beautiful and we because we refuse to let you dictate our lives.

Throw all the rain you want because our shining sun will make colours that match our flag. 

Our flag that we will wear with pride at Pride. 

Our flag which no amount of teasing or hate will ever make fade completely.  

Our flag at our Pride because why should we have to give you a reason for our happiness.
