august favourites

hello!

August was a fairly relaxed month for me so I didn't go anywhere or do anything to try out many products; although I am getting near to the bottom of some of my current one though so if an "Empties" style post is one you'd be interested then just shout and let me know! Despite this there were a few things I did really really love this month so decided I'd throw together a short August Favourites for you!

~Music wise I've been adoring Tilted by Christine and The Queens:  I know this song isn't a brand new one but I've only recently heard it and honestly I think I've fallen in love.  It's been on repeat so many times I could probably sing it all, french lines included! (probably..please nobody make me try.)

~After my holiday I returned to England with a tan that I wasn't at all looking forward to losing but thanks to Soap & Glory's 'Smoothie Star Body Buttercream' it's barely faded at all in over a month!  This isn't a new product for me as I've been using it daily for over a year now but I was a little worried that it wasn't specifically an after-the-sun type product but it's been great; no peeling at all!

~After reading almost an entire bookshelf in July I've slowed down again and only managed to re-read the Mortal Instruments series this month; definitely enjoyed them though as I read most of them about four years ago but never actually finished the series and all I can say is it was definitely worth the wait; wow!

~Online of course it absolutely has to be everything #GRLPOWR; we've had such an amazing response on twitter and I'm so unbelievably excited about it; but also the other girls are honestly the loveliest bunch ever even if our groupchat is a little mad; I think Ellie summed it up excellently in her post.. "And blimey, I can’t even go downstairs to get a party ring without coming back and finding out we are designing our own torches."  everyone involved is so passionate about it and I hope that comes across to the rest of the twitter-sphere!

Thankyou for reading & if there's any thing you absolutely loved in August then please let me know! Books, songs, make up..I'm always wanting to find out about cool things!

GRLPOWR

hello!!

If you've been on twitter at all today you might have noticed a certain #GRLPOWR tag being thrown around a lot and therefore may be wondering what? who? huh??

Well I'm thrilled and over-the-moon-excited to add my voice to the train of explanations currently happening! Since the beginning of this week there's been an almost non-stop active group chat between myself and several other lovely ladies; I don't think ever I've jumped headfirst into a conversation and been caught in such welcoming arms before.. there has been nothing but kindness, helping each other out and love.

Together we decided that we had so much grlpowr between us that we might as well make use of it and so the #GRLPOWR bloggers community & chat was born!

So; what do you need to know about it?

  • There are going to be two twitter chats; one on Tuesday's at 9pm and one Thursday's at 8pm.  The first one is next week: 30th August and will be hosted by the lovely Lauren!
  • Not only will we be hosting two chats a week but every single sunday on our twitter we will be having 'Supportive Sundays' where anybody can tweet us any issues or problems and all the admins will be taking shifts to reply and help you out; from friends to relationships we'll be there.
  • You can follow @grlpowrchat on instagram and twitter!
  • Spread the love, the word and the grlpower by adding #GRLPOWR to your tweets, we'll see it and retweet it.
  • We've created our own blog as well; we'll be posting on there ourselves but we'd love to host lots of guest blog posts on there; check it out here and get in touch via our twitter if you're interested!
  • And last but definitely not least you can find & follow everyone's own amazing little spaces:

a little piece of crete

hello!

As I mentioned briefly in my last post I spent two weeks of July laying on a pool lounger in Crete reading; it was pretty relaxing not moving anywhere but between the food area and the pool but there were a few times when we grabbed our cameras and either wandered down to the beach or hopped on the bus into Chania and I figured; why not share some of my favourite photo's here!

Several times we headed down to the beach to watch the sunset.

While in Chania we went on a sunset cruise around some of the little rocky islands just off the coast.

My favourite part of exploring new places is wandering away from the commercial roads and finding all the beautiful side streets.

The sunset from the boat was beautiful even though I discovered that yes, I do feel travel sick on water..

The majority of the time we were there the sea was quite lively; not so good for swimming but definitely good for photo opportunities!

I completely fell in love with this cat and took about seven hundred photos of it before my mum tempted me away with the magic words "ice cream."

Crete is so unbelievably beautiful and such a lovely mismatch of places; if you like beaches- it's got them, if you like towns and bustling nightlife- it's got that too, if you prefer scenery and mountains then just turn around because it's got them as well.  I've been there twice already and would honestly just keep going back each year until I've visited every square inch!

Do you have any places you adore and dream of returning to again and again? Let me know in the comments!

recently read: july

hello!

Last month I read, read, did some more reading and then continued to read. My family and I had two weeks on holiday in Crete and most of that time was spent reading (and sunbathing of course) and although July finished several days ago now I wanted to do a blog post just talking a little about each of the books I read.

Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling: I'm not going to go into detail about it as I think most people know about these but I hadn't actually read the entire series all the way through for a couple of years and I'd actually forgotten just how much I love the books; all the one liners and silly little conversations between various characters and the way of foreshadowing things that you don't register straight away.. but they still make me laugh (and cry) as much as they've always done and are still way up in my all time favourites.

The Radleys  by Matt Haig: this was a book I kind of picked up at random and is about a family of vampires living in surban England and how their lives change as their secret unravels. The way it's written took me a little while to get used to as it's quite jumpy in perspective which meant that I didn't understand a few things until several pages it occurred; I'm not sure I'd recommend it until I've re-read it as I honestly can't really remember my initial opinion; but it was funny in some places and sad in others and overall a fairly good book.

Girl Hearts Girl by Lucy Sutcliffe: Lucy is one half of a used-to-be-long-distance couple (Kaelyn & Lucy) and I've watched their youtube videos ever since they started uploading them, seeing how happy they each were in their relationship gave me the courage to accept myself and the confidence to give other people the chance, but this book..wow.  I read it all in one sitting and cried several times (I actually read it twice and cried just as much the second time); this is the book I needed when I was fourteen, seventeen and now.  Totally completely recommend it to everyone, especially if you're a girl who also hearts other girls but also even if you're not. Lucy has so perfectly written about and described her feelings & emotions which I also experienced and went through in a way that I can never quite do and I'm determined to get my friends to read it.

A Universe From Nothing by Lawrence. M. Krauss: a non fiction book about stars and space that I'd been putting off reading for several weeks that really wasn't as scary or confusing as I thought it would be. It was written in a really easy-to-understand way that didn't come across as being patronising!  If you're interested in space and learning about really cool clever people from the past then this is definitely a good book to pick up; it's factual but wasn't just a cover to cover onslaught of information being fired at you.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by "J. K. Rowling", John Tiffany & Jack Thorne: hmm.. well. I read this two weeks ago and still have no idea what I think of it. Part of me is thrilled because helloitsanewharrypotterthing?! but part of me is just, right, okay..moving on then.. I will say that from a drama student perspective this reads like it has to be on stage and not paper; even with the stage directions it just doesn't really flow or come across very impressively; it needs to have all the written directions performed and flying props as physical objects to  see to bring it to life, on paper it just falls a little flat of the standard you kind of expect from a Harry Potter product.  It was still good but I just feel like it could have been better (also Albus+Scorp4ever is something I've never really given any thought to but oh my goodness yes.)
#The Perks of being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky: this was another re-read of an all time favourite; I can't even explain how much I love this book, or why, but honestly it is amazing.  The writing, the characters, the themes threaded through the entire book, all beautiful and beautifully done.  It's been out for years but if you haven't got round to reading it then honestly just go pick up a copy and read away because this is the book that means the most to me and if even one more person reads it then I'll be happy.

On the Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher: I wanted to read this originally because it was Carrie's book and it sounded cool; and then I read it and fell in love during the first chapter.  For me it's definitely a book I'll be re-reading sometime soon; it weaved around so many themes and I had so many emotions while reading this, so well written- especially for a first fiction book- and if you haven't read this then I won't spoil anything but it's so quotable and there were parts that made me laugh and parts that had me sobbing into my cup of tea.

My favourite two books, new books anyway, were undoubtedly Girl Hearts Girl and On the Other Side

Have you read any good books lately? Let me know in the comments!
